What is a Public Comment Period?
Whenever there is new coverage or significant changes to existing coverage, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is required to offer a Public Comment Period. Just prior to the comment period, CMS will release preliminary rules related to the coverage (like how many garments each patient can get at one time, how often they can be replaced, etc.), then the public will have 60 days to comment on those proposed rules, after which CMS may decide to make changes.
Why should I participate in the Public Comment Period?
If there is anything we don’t like about the proposed rules, or wish were better, the public comment period is our opportunity to try and convince the CMS to modify those things before the rules are finalized. This will be an important opportunity for all stakeholders and advocates, and we hope everyone will participate. Each person can only submit one comment, however, so it’s very important that you be prepared to make yours as effective as possible.
What if I have other questions?
If you have questions about anything other than the Public Comment Period, we encourage you to review our Frequently Asked Question Document prior to attending one of the webinars. Thank you for your advocacy!
