Reintroduction of the Lymphedema Treatment Act (LTA) in the Senate may occur as soon as next week! Final preparations are underway.
Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) will once again be our lead sponsor. She has championed the bill since it was first introduced in the Senate, thanks to the advocacy of our late Board Chair, Elaine Eigeman, pictured here with Senator Cantwell, whose indomitable spirit left an indelible legacy. Elaine called the LTA the most important work of her life, and inspired countless other advocates to find and use their voice.
We are also excited to share that Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) will be returning as the Republican co-lead on our bill, after taking a hiatus during the last Congress due to serving as the Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over the LTA. (Chairs do not typical lead bills that fall under the jurisdiction of their committee.)
Senator Grassley shares a personal connection to this issue through his wife, who is a breast cancer survivor. Both he and his wife spoke with one of our advocates during a Town Hall meeting in Iowa, and shortly thereafter he decided to champion the LTA with Senator Cantwell. A few months after introducing the LTA in the Senate for the first time, he partnered with Senator Schumer (another long-time supporter of the LTA) to introduce this March 6th Lymphedema Day Resolution. Senator Grassley speaks about his support for the cancer community and the LTA in this 2018 interview.
Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has already contributed to our 2021 Give Hope campaign! Thanks to a matching donor, every dollar counts double until we reach our goal, and we are now three quarters of the way there. For those who would prefer to donate by check, our address is below my signature. Please donate today — a gift in any amount will make a difference!
